Calcium is considered to have blood pressure reducing effects. As such, take foods rich in calcium such as broccoli and cabbages, dry beans, salmon, soybean and tofu are some food choices.
Magnesium is another mineral good for high blood pressure patients. Magnesium relaxes the blood vessels, thereby allowing for blood to flow more easily through the vessels. Avocados, spinach, almonds, sunflower seed, and barley are some foods rich in magnesium.
Vitamin C gives remarkable benefits to high blood pressure patients. Among other things Vitamin C helps expand constricted arteries which results in the lowering of blood pressure. Aside from citrus fruits such as mandarins and oranges, other fruits rich in vitamin C include kiwis and strawberries. Vegetables rich in vitamin C are red cabbage, and red bell peppers to name two.
Fish has also been found to help alleviate high blood pressure. The omega-3 fatty acids present in fish lessen the possibility of blood clumps and clots which reduce the occurrence of artery narrowing.
These are just some of the things hypertensive people can focus on to help lower their blood pressure. It should also be noted that aside from taking certain foods regularly, high blood pressure patients should also lower if not altogether stay away from certain foods. Sodium (salt), fat, and caffeine are the major items to stay away from as they seem to directly or indirectly increase blood pressure.
Although diets that espouse the foods above are considered good for high blood pressure patients, it is still best to consult your doctor before getting in to them. Food intake should be part of planning the overall plan of a high blood pressure patient. This should be associated with an exercise regimen that must be supervised by a health professional.
Lastly, in lowering high blood pressure there must also be a life style change. In most cases, high blood pressure is brought about by a lifestyle prone to unhealthy eating habits and lack of an exercise regimen. To correct this, the patient must agree to a change of lifestyle and stick to it. This usually entails, eating more healthily, exercising regularly, reducing stress and quitting bad habits such as smoking and drinking.
