100+ things to do in Dominica - #6

Here's installment #5 of 100+ things to do in Dominica:
40. Take a boatride up the Indian River
Certified guides will row and share their knowledge of local flora and fauna. You'll drift past overhanging Bwa Mang trees as you search for fish and crabs in the brackish river. Glimpses of nearby mountains are stunning.

41. Ride a horse on the beach
Canter along the beach on one of the eight horses available at Tropical Trails. You can also ride into the forest too. The horses are located within walking distance of Ross University at Picard.

42. Partake of some active water sports
You can rent a kayak, a tube, a windsurfer or go water-skiing! Jet skis may be available too.

43. Discover a Secret Beach
If solitude and a swim are more your style, ask the folks at Wave Dancer to take you by boat to Secret Beach. Enjoy sun bathing, a swim and some snorkeling. Take a picnic too. Arrange your pick-up time (before dusk) and they'll come back for you.

44. Stroll to a cold Sulphur spring
Sulphur springs are not always hot! The road from Douglas Bay to Penville passes close to a cold sulphur spring. Look for the sign on the north side of the road and follow the short groomed track into the bush to observe this uncommon site. A 4WD drive vehicle is recommended on this road. Binoculars would be helpful when gazing at nearby Guadeloupe and Les Saintes.

45. Plunge into a natural pool
Near the village of Bense on the northeast coast is a deep pool called the Chaudiere. high rocks surround it. It will involve a short but steep climb on the return!

46. Hike to Penville
At the northernmost point of the road at Capuchin is the Corner Heritage Park. From there, an old bridle path leads to Penville. It is a moderate trail of three miles with spectacular views. Look for lovely butterflies on the route too.

47. Observe the unique skills of the Carib Indians
In the Carib Territory, stop and admire the unique naturally woven grass/reed baskets at roadside stands. Observe men carving seaworthy canoes out of hardy gommier trees.

48. Trek through the Carib Territory
Gain a greater appreciation of Carib culture and history by taking an ancient trail. Many of these tracks require the assistance and knowledge of a Carib guide. There are numerous breathtaking vistas through varied terrain.

49. Appreciate Carib Culture
Make an appointment to visit the Karina Cultural Centre in Bataka. Learn about various aspects of Carib life and culture, including song, dance, herbal medicine and language. Ask about performance dates.
