Tips For Wives

2 comments:
Life gets really busy sometimes. When it does our bedroom lives tend to get put on the back burner. I know it takes time and energy but if we neglect this area of our marriages we are not being the best we can be as wives.

Just think about it. Every area in our lives as wives can be outsourced except this area. We can pay someone to clean the house, do the laundry, cook the meals or eat out but the bedroom part is just for us to do. We are the ones who are given the responsibilities to minister to our husbands in the bedroom.

Take some time out today and plan your days in such a way that you get some rest in order to be available to meet this top need of your husband. It's that important!

Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth, For your love is better than wine.
Song of Songs 1:2

Wifey Wednesday - Negativity

2 comments:
After many weeks I'm back again with the link up to Sheila Gregoire's Wifey Wednesday. Wifey Wednesday is the day that we discuss marriage more in depth and link up to Sheila's blog. To read Sheila's and other Wifey Wednesday posts or to link up your own post on marriage visit To Love Honor and Vacuum.

Sheila discusses negativity in marriage and how to deal with it. There are so many hurting wives out there. They suffer from verbal abuse from their husbands and they bottle it up all inside. They say nothing to the abusive spouse or to a trusted friend or advisor. I am not one to advocate being rude to anyone so don't expect me to say dish it back. I do recommend that you stand up for yourself and refuse this behavior.

It takes two to have a conversation. If your partner repeatedly refuses to heed your warnings to stop then I would suggest leaving the room each time he starts up his negative talk. Let him know that you are not going to stay there and walk out reminding him that you've repeatedly spoken to him about it. One should never be subjected to verbal abuse. I like Sheila's advice - go read it here - Wifey Wednesday - Changing the Dynamic. She talks about other issues as well.

God who created us looks at us as good. Verbal abuse takes its toll on anyone's psyche so even after stepping out you may need to speak to yourself. Enter into a time of praise and worship and thank God for all the good that He has put in you. Speak your value to yourself. Let your ears hear good things about yourself to counteract the negativity that was deposited by the negative words.

I remember in my single days when I had to deal with an incident of negativity from someone. I verbally re-affirmed myself by saying - "What a good thing my sense of value and worth does not come from what you say but from God". You may have to say it over and over. You also have to ask God to heal the wounds caused by those negative words. He is ready and willing to do that.

Another key thing is to make sure that you forgive your spouse. Unforgiveness breeds bitterness which breeds physical ailments at times. So forgiving is more for you than it is your spouse. Am I making sense? Let go of ill feelings and let forgiveness flow. Speak God's worth and value to yourself. You are fearfully and wonderfully made says the word of God.

So to conclude - refuse to accept negativity, speak God's worth and value to yourself and forgive. I would love to hear your thoughts. Do you agree or would you handle it some other way. I'm looking forward to your responses.

Holiday Tips for Wives

No comments:
Below is a compilation of tips from Lori for the holiday season. Enjoy.

As Christmas approaches with the usual gatherings of family, take the time to pray for your husband's relationship with his extended family (both his family and yours).

If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Romans 12:18 NIV

___________________________

Validate your husband's holiday traditions. Sing some carols, fix that "unique" cranberry relish that Grandma Ethel used to make, or go to the candlelight service. Do whatever is special to him and brings meaning to the Christmas holiday season for him.

... but love edifies (builds up). 1 Corinthians 8:1b NAS

____________________________

Ask your husband if he needs help with any last minute shopping. He may need gifts for friends or coworkers. Even buying for family members can be tough. Be available to brain storm for ideas and do a little run around for him.

... put on a heart of ... kindness ... Colossians 3:12 NAS

__________________________

Buy some holiday underwear/lingerie and put them on under your regular clothes. Then invite your husband to undress you for a little holiday fun.

I am my beloved's and his desire is toward me. Song of Songs 7:10a NAS

____________________

Something to do in a quiet post-holiday moment ~ ask your husband if there was a gift he was hoping for and didn't get. If so, buy the item and give it as a New Year's gift or as a "just because" gift.

I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year. Charles Dickens

Wifey Wednesday - Small Stuff

4 comments:
Do you let the little things in life get to you?  On today's Wifey Wednesday Sheila talks about our perspective in different seasons of life and how it affects the way we deal with our loved ones.  She asks "Do you ever feel discontented, grumpy, mad at the world?"

There are times when I do feel discontented, grumpy and mad at the world.  I find that at those times the most common denominator is tiredness.  The thing that affects my mood the most is when I'm tired or when my period is approaching(I usually feel tired then too).  Anytime I hear myself being short or being petty I realize that I'm way too tired to continue.  So at those times I stop and go take a rest.  If a rest is not possible I try to deliberately not answer anything I feel offended about but speak to myself in my mind to get myself to calm down and think straight.

So here's another question from Sheila: How do you recapture that gratitude you once had? How do you come back to the perspective you had about being grateful for a family?

There's a method that many use with their children which is time out.  Even adults need to give themselves a time out.  Whether it be 5, 10 or 15 minutes.  Just taking that time and praying through the emotions I'm feeling helps.  For those times when time out doesn't work, like I mentioned above the key for me is to be well rested. I find that when I'm well rested and prayed up all is right with my world and I don't get irritated so easily.

Another strategy that I've read on many blogs is to keep a thankful diary.  Many are part of a meme called Thankful Thursday where they list things that they are thankful for.  Keeping a list of things we are thankful for in the forefront of our minds helps us not to sweat the small stuff.  It's hard to be grumpy when you're thinking thoughts of thankfulness.

One of the things I also do is to give my husband or whomever it is the benefit of the doubt.  I usually speak to myself and say something to the effect of "Maybe they're having a bad day or maybe their mind was elsewhere" or whatever is pertinent to the situation that gives the person the benefit of the doubt.  When I do that then I am not sweating any thing much less the small stuff.

So how about you?  Do you sweat the small stuff?  What strategies do you use to help yourself not to sweat the small stuff?  Share in the comments and feel free to hit the reply button below someone else's comment and respond to theirs.  Let's get talking...

Wifey Wednesday - Is Criticism Taking Over Your Marriage

3 comments:
It starts off innocently enough. He asks for our opinion on something and we give it being very careful not to hurt his feelings. It goes on like that for a while and life is wonderful. One day he tells you to be honest, give him the raw truth, he can take it.

You tell him in such a way that would not hurt his feelings but he tells you that you're holding back. So you decide o.k. he is asking for it so why not. You give him the unpolished truth. He grimaces but says thank you for your honesty. You see the grimace but you hear the thanks and come to the conclusion that he must really want you to help him by giving the unpolished truth. And right there is where it starts. Criticism begins to take over your marriage.

You begin to point out every big and little thing he does wrong. He cannot match his clothes to save his life. He can't dress your little girl properly. He cannot change the baby's diaper the way you want it done. He needs to lose some weight. He doesn't spend enough time interacting with the children. He squeezes the toothpaste the wrong way. He always leaves the toilet seat up. He doesn't help around the house. The yard looks so untidy - why can't he do something about it. And on and on and on. At every turn and in almost every circumstance he faces our unpolished truth designed to help him be a better person. Is that really working though?

Look at his behaviour. Has it changed any with you constantly pointing out what he's doing wrong? Is he much improved? How long has it been since you've been pointing out those faults of his? Has he made even the slightest move toward accepting your advice in all that time? Chances are he even seems worse in his behaviour. You can do something about it. What can I do you say? Well in the words of my husband while he is preaching sometimes "I'm glad you asked" :)

What can you do about it? 2 Words. SHUT UP!!! Now don't go all ballistic on me now but that is exactly what you need to do. SHUT UP. None of us likes being criticized. Criticism does not lend to a very pleasant atmosphere at all. So let's do unto others as we would have them to do unto us and stop the criticizing. I have to deliberately close my mouth at times and pray instead when I encounter something my husband did or did not do that was displeasing to me.

The best thing we can do for our husbands is to give them room to make mistakes. We learn more and better when we make mistakes. So we allow them the freedom to fail and fail and fail again. God will take care of us always as long as we are His children. When our husbands are given the space they need they usually end up doing the very thing that we would like to see done.

Now that is not to say that we don't express our dislikes and preferences. It just means that we need not constantly criticize for every little things. It means that we choose the right time to bring up our concerns. It also means that once we express ourselves we let it go. Let the grass grow high. Let us cover the toothpaste ourselves or leave it uncovered. Let us let it go and commit every thing into the hands of the Lord. If criticism is taking over your marriage shut up and pray.

What are other ways you suggest we keep criticism from taking over our marriages? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comment section below.

Wifey Wednesday - His Body

6 comments:
A couple of weeks ago on Wifey Wednesday - Your Body we discussed whether we like our bodies and the correlation between how we view our bodies and our sex drives. Today we turn the tables and speak about the way we view our husband's body and how it affects our sex drives.

Sheila's asks, "What do you do when your husband fails to keep his body attractive? What do you do when he's gained 75 pounds? 100 pounds? When he won't take care of himself? How do you stay attracted when he's just not that nice to look at?"

I'm going to share the answers that Sheila gives on her post and then throw the questions out to you all. These are questions I have little experience in because my hubby is the one who brought me into a more healthy lifestyle and he continues to exercise and keep his body in shape. So here we go.

1. Sheila mentions that sexual intimacy is much more than the physical. Totally agree but for someone who has to look at an overweight almost ready to squash you husband and be intimate I can imagine that it might not be so easy to look past the physical. What are your suggestions? How can someone look past the physical and concentrate on the much more than physical aspect of intimacy with their spouse?

2. Sheila says that as the woman chances are that we are the ones who cook therefore we control what food comes into the house so buy healthier foods. Again I agree but there are men who would throw a royal hissy fit if you took away their comfort foods - the fried, greasy, sugar laden, white flour stuff that is presented as food. In a situation like that the woman seems powerless to change the eating habits of her husband to one that is more healthy. What steps do you recommend that someone in such a position take to help her husband become healthier and lose some weight in the process?

3. Sheila says exercise together. Again if the man refuses to get himself off the couch or the bed what can you do?

I agree with all the points and suggestions that Sheila brought forth in her post today. As she says, men who are married live, on average, about eight years longer than men who are not because their wives take care of them. But I know that some husbands can be difficult or downright stubborn, hostile and totally resistant to any changes when it comes to health issues. I would love to hear how you would help someone in such a situation.  How would you handle it?

Wifey Wednesday - Appreciation

7 comments:
How do you feel when someone appreciates you?  How do you feel when someone does not appreciate you?  Think about these two questions for a moment.

Today on Wifey Wednesday we are talking appreciation in marriage.  One of the memory verses my 7yr old has memorized this week while doing his ACE pace schoolwork is Matthew 7:12 which says:

Whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ... to them.
The New King James Version puts it this way:
Whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them...
 From the Living Bible:
Do for others what you want them to do for you...
Going back to our earlier questions - remember how you felt when you thought of each of them.  We feel good, on top of the world, we can conquer anything when we are appreciated and we feel bad, low, down when we're not.  Now think of your husband.  Despite his irritating, annoying, disgusting, totally bad habits - do you think he has feelings also?  Don't you think that he would feel just as you do - good when appreciated and bad when not appreciated?

Using the verse above as our guideline (as the Bible should be in all we do), we should basically show appreciation to our husbands because that's what we would like for ourselves.  It did not clarify and say that we should do to them only when they do to us.  It may not be easy to show appreciation for a spouse's cheating, lying, stealing, lazy, selfish ways but in every human being I've found there is some element of good, small though it may be.  Let us challenge ourselves today find that element of good and show appreciation to our husbands for that element we find.

Sometimes in marriage we act up because our need for appreciation is not being met.  Let us try an experiment over the next week or so.  Let us look for things that our husbands do that may be worthy of appreciation.  It may be something as simple as covering the toothpaste back after he uses it.  We can say something like - "I've heard women complain about how their husbands do not put the cap back on the tube of toothpaste. I'm so glad that you are not one of them. I really appreciate that." Or words to that effect.  You may not be able to praise him for his lazines but if we look hard enough we can find something.

Now for those of us who have wonderful husbands that we take for granted - this is a wake up call.  If we do not show proper appreciation - at best he will be enduring being married to us because he is an upright Christian who will not leave or at worst he will begin to receive appreciation elsewhere and despite his attempts to resist may fall prey to adultery.  We are not responsible for another's actions but we can do our part to ensure that we are the wives we should be.

If a husband's love language is Words of Affirmation it is even more important that we speak those words of appreciation.  It will communicate love in a greater way and will further strengthen the marriage bond.  Daily I try to build my husband up with words.  His primary love language is not words of affirmation but I say thank you and show appreciation for mundane things that are expected of a husband just because I want him to feel good.  That sets a pleasant atmosphere around our home and keeps the demons of bitterness, strife and rejection away.

Share your thoughts on appreciation in marriage in the comments below.  I would love to hear what you think.  And for more Wifey Wednseday visit Sheila's blog - To Love Honor and Vacuum.

Wifey Wednesday - Your Body

8 comments:
Do you like your body? Today on Wifey Wednesday Shelia makes some valid points on the direct or indirect correlation between how we view our bodies and our sex drives.

I do find that when I am tired and have not taken care of myself properly, my desires are low.  The moment I get enough rest and water I begin to feel a bit more amorous and open to my husband's advances.  For the most part I love my body.  I am working on the part I least enjoy and that is the flab in my stomach region. How about you?  Do you love your body? Are you doing something about the parts that you can control?

Today's Wifey Wednesday post is a short one because I want you to go over to Sheila's blog read what she wrote.  Her post covers parts of this body issues problem in a deep and profound way.   Also I want you to take part in her great unveiling party and win some prizes as well.  Click HERE to read what Sheila wrote.

Wifey Wednesday - Creating The Right Atmosphere

7 comments:
What are you doing to create the right environment for your husband? That is the question that Sheila asks today on Wifey Wednesday.

I agree with Sheila that when we create a nurturing, loving environment in our marriage, we both become different people in a good way. We grow. And we give God more permission to work in both of our hearts, because we're honouring what He says about love. Let me share an example from my life with you.

I know that the person I am today I would not be if it were not for my husband. He is so patient, kind and loving. We have never had serious adjustment issues as a couple but when we got married I had certain issues to deal with that had caused me to feel less than, to feel that I was not worthy of genuine love. Oh I knew in my head and told myself that I was but deep down inside the feeling of unworthiness was there. I remember asking my husband often why he loves me. He is such a wise person that he never listed all my good qualities, talents or abilities because if he did I suspect that my overthinking mind would begin to rationalize that if I were no longer so or could no longer do whatever, he would not love me anymore. I don't clearly remember what his answer was but what I do remember was that everytime he answered there was this feeling of peace, contentment and satisfaction that he gave the right answer and most of all I felt loved. He also would at an unexpected times tell me reassuring words of his love for me not being dependent on what I would or would not do, could or could not do.

Another thing that he did to create the right environment was to continually point me back to God. By that I mean that whenever I wanted to do something or get involved with something, instead of telling me right out what he thought I should do, he would tell me that if the Lord is leading me to do it then go right ahead. That meant that the decision was mine and he was not going to force his opinions or desires on me. It meant a lot to me because I practiced submission and when he did that I felt safe that he would not take advantage like I've heard many men do. Pointing me to God like that did two things. For one, it allowed me to draw closer to God and secondly it made me love my husband more. It meant that he would not be a stumbling block in my growth as a person or as a christian. That did not mean that he did not voice his concerns. When he had them he did but he knew that by listening to God I would be safe.

My husband has consistently encouraged me over the years in different areas. When we got married and I moved to New Orleans to be with him, he continually encouraged me to make friends. I was not wanting to because I felt that I would only leave them behind anyway. He introduced me to all his friends, male and female and encouraged me to initiate conversations with some of the ladies on campus. After a while I made my first tentative steps at starting friendships. It was such a big leap for me that I had to write down lists of questions to ask just to start and keep the conversation going. LOL! Many who know me from Dominica would not believe what I just said but it was true. I felt safer not putting myself out there to make new friends but I'm glad now that I followed the encouragement of my husband. I have totally evolved into almost a people person.

My husband encourages me when he sees my doubts in myself as a mother, homemaker, wife etc. He is so steady and reliable. The Lord knew what He was doing when he brought us together. My husband sometimes says when he preaches that the man he is today he would not be because of me. I don't know about that. He would have to go into details of that himself but I do know that for me the person I am today might not have been possible if the Lord had not blessed me with my husband.

I am striving to create for him the very same atmosphere of love and acceptance he has given to me and I pray that I am succeeding. I try to keep nagging out and patiently pray after expressing my concerns to him. I encourage him to go ahead and do the things that are in his heart and whenever I pray about that particular thing I let him know that I prayed for him in that area. I speak words of praise when he does things around the home and out in public whether big or small. I compliment him in front of our friends. I purposely project eyes of admiration while I'm learning from his preaching. There are so many ways to create the right atmosphere for growth in marriage and many times it is the little things that do it.

I was rather long-winded today but I pray that you received something from what I wrote. My final word of encouragement is - Don't give up! If my husband had given up on me back in the early days when I kept asking why he loved me, I would not be who I am today. I don't have to ask that question anymore because he created the right atmosphere and I grew.

Wifey Wednesday - Fighting In Marriage

4 comments:
Today on Wifey Wednesday Sheila asks - Have you ever had a fight because your husband wanted to fix something? Do you have a special way of resolving conflict?

My hubby and I resolve our conflicts by doing what we call keeping short accounts. Usually when one of us angers or upsets the other we express how we feel as soon as possible. Right at the moment may not be the most appropriate time to say it so we wait until a better time but we do not let it go for weeks on end. Chances are that it will be forgotten and left undealt with might cause a root of bitterness to spring up. When we are expressing our feelings we try to avoid accusing tones and instead focus on how the behavior made us feel. We try to avoid making each other feel belittled or less than a person. After we express our feelings we apologize for the hurt caused. Sometimes we are right in what we said but the way we said it caused hurt. So we apologize for the hurt caused instead of what we said.

My hubby is the calmer one in the marriage and I've had many times to apologize for the wrong way I said something. I admire his control and pray and strive to be more controlled. I remember early on in our marriage when the Lord convicted me about my way of responding to things he said or did. I cried out to God to change me and you know what happened? Every day there was an opportunity to exercise that fruit of the Spirit called self-control. More times than I care to remember, several times a day even I had to apologize to him. Let me tell you, that was a humbling experience for sure. I had to shape up if I did not want to be apologizing so often. During this growing experience my hubby was so forgiving, so calm. I praise God for his steady nature.

Today I am much better but being human we do things that hurt each other unintentionally so we remind ourselves that we would not intentionally hurt each other. We also give each other the benefit of the doubt. We look at possible reasons like tiredness, monthly cycles(for me), busy schedules and so forth and take those into consideration. Then we keep short accounts and discuss how the behaviour made us feel. We apologize and move on from there.

Marriage is wonderful. I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world but I must tell you that God has used it to really shape me. So we don't really fight per say and I love that. Now it's your turn. Have you ever had a fight because your husband wanted to fix something? Do you have a special way of resolving conflict? Let me know in the comments or why not write your own blog post, and then go on over to Sheila's blog and enter them in the Linky feature.

Wifey Wednesday - Why Is Communication So Hard

3 comments:
For More Wifey Wednesday articles go to Sheila Gregoire's blog by clicking HERE. Now for today's post.

From Dr. Gary Chapman

Why does communication break down after marriage? Often, the answer lies in emotions. Before marriage we felt one over-powering emotion - love. But now, the emotions of hurt, anger, disappointment, and fear often dominate. These emotions do not encourage us to communicate. Or, if we communicate it is likely to be critical.

We speak out of our anger and create even more negative feelings. The key is learning how to share emotions without condemnation. "I'm feeling hurt and when you have time, I need your help." Identifying your feelings and choosing to share them is step one. Step two is accepting the feelings of your mate and asking, "What can I do to help?"

Why is communication so important in a relationship? Because we are not mind readers. The apostle Paul recognized this reality when he asked the question, "Who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God." The reason we know what God is like is because God has chosen to reveal Himself. If we listen and reciprocate, we can have a love relationship with God.

Likewise, when we reveal ourselves to another person, and they listen and reciprocate, we can build an intimate relationship with that person. Communication is to a relationship what breathing is to the body. Don't stop talking and don't stop listening.

If your hubby's love language is Acts of Service this tip will go a long way toward filling his Love Tank.

As a kindness, do your husband's least favorite chore for him. It will be such a nice treat for him to turn around and find that it's already been done.

Do not let kindness and truth leave you; Bind them around your neck. Proverbs 3:3 NAS

We all want to feel appreciated and our hubby's are no exception.

What kinds of things really make your husband feel appreciated and loved? What makes him feel wanted? What makes him feel like he has value in your eyes? Some answers may come easily to you, but others may not. Please give this more than a cursory thought and intentionally do and say what will bless your husband.

A fun hobby to do together.

I encourage y'all to start a collection with your husband. It doesn't have to be expensive. You can collect movie ticket stubs (they make interesting collages), salt and pepper shakers, or spoons. You can collect over a common hobby or interest (like collecting books about hymns or old lighthouses). Just open the door to some fun times looking for something new for your collection.

Often the search proves more profitable than the goal. E.L. Konigsburg

Pampering, now that's what I'm talking about.

Send a special invitation to your husband for an evening of pampering. Help him out of his work clothes, draw a bath and gently scrub him all over and wash his hair. Warm his towel in the dryer and take your time drying him off. Have him lay down and give him a massage followed by leisurely love making. Then spend the rest of the evening enjoying each other's company. (Personalize this evening for your husband. You might include a meal, an at home movie, snuggling up with a good book, etc.)

Drink and imbibe deeply, O lovers. Song of Songs 5:1b NAS

Clear air and movement allows for freer conversation and closeness.

Go for a walk together. If you're city folk, walk in the mall. If you're country folk, go for a nature hike. Walk around the block or walk to the store and back. Just walk, hold hands and talk about your day, your dreams, anything or nothing.

Sensual touch and fewer rough spots - oh yeah!

Buy some nice "manly" smelling lotion and routinely rub it on the rough and dry parts of your husband's body. It will give your husband some nice sensual touch and make him easier to hug (fewer rough spots). :)

If your husband's Love Language is Acts of Service, he will definitely appreciate today's tip being done.

Look at the condition of your husband's things. Are any of his tools, clothes, etc. in need of fixing or replacing? (I'm not talking about his absolutely favorite t-shirt, the one with several holes, that's sacred ground.) ;) Fix up what you can and encourage him to mend, fix or replace the rest. He's worth it!

This is a wonderful idea.

Let's romance our husbands with a love letter this week. What does your husband need to read to feel loved? Is he the kind of guy who needs paper to hold or is he an email kind of guy? Does he like poetry or just a few heartfelt words that express your love?
A small gift or a bit of candy would be a nice addition for those who have husbands with "gifts" as a love language.

All I really need is love, but a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt! Lucy Van Pelt (in Peanuts, by Charles M. Schulz)
